Portrait TipsAbout Emily

For infants and children I work mainly with black and white backdrops, natural settings in your home or outdoors. A child will photograph better if they feel like they are playing, not posing.

Do
Bring things your child finds comfort in. Also feel free to bring their favorite toys. The best & most meaningful props are personal items from your home.
Do
Dress your child in neutral solid colored outfits if you are unsure. Something as simple as jeans & a turtleneck will do. Feel free to dress them as casual or as formal as you wish.

Do
Schedule your session at the time of day your child is usually in good spirits & well-rested.

My art is focused on photographing people, not props - I do have a few props on hand but prefer more natural images. I strive to capture the unique qualities in people and avoid ultra cheesy backgrounds and cookie-cutter portraits. I want you to have portraits you can treasure for a lifetime. In keeping with this theme I've found a few tips before your session can be helpful. These tips are for the people who want them and should never compromise your unique style. Seniors please make sure whomever is purchasing your portraits approves of your outfits, hairstyles and location choices.

  • For family portraits, please wear complimenting colors in similar styles. Jeans, khakis, turtlenecks, sweaters, v-necks - just keep it simple.

  • Avoid busy patterns and bright colors.

  • Avoid wearing yellow or green as they can adversely affect skin tone.

  • I often suggest barefeet or socks for a more natural approach to portraits (so make sure your socks have no holes and your toenails are trimmed! :)

  • Plan to wear your hair in a style you're comfortable with. Avoid new cuts or styles. If your session is outdoors avoid hairspray or product that would stop your hair from moving freely in a breeze.

  • Avoid large prints or patterns that detract from your face.

  • Casual outfits in earth tones work best for outdoor photographs.

  • Hats are great but please make sure they compliment your outfit.

  • Avoid ultra-trendy clothing or hairstyles - you don't want your portrait dated before you get the prints back!

  • Most importantly, be yourself - comfort will show in your pictures.
